Approach Light System (ALS) refers to runway lighting that helps pilots align their aircraft for safe landing.  This system consists of light bars and/or strobe lights that extend outward from the approach end of the runway, radiating light beams in directional patterns to provide visual guidance.  Highly sophisticated, Approach Light Systems are a drastic improvement for the operational safety of in-flight aircraft – especially in poor visibility conditions.  The Approach Light System will usually serve a runway with an Instrument Approach Procedure (IAP) – a series of predetermined landing maneuvers – associated with it.
